Sonography Glossary

This glossary contains words related to the medical digital field of study. More specific radiographic and sonography.

angiography
noun
Examination by X-ray of blood or lymph vessels, carried out after introduction of a radiopaque substance.
Example: Coronary angiography Coronary angiography is considered to be the gold standard for the detection of reperfusion as it provides an accurate visualisation of the occluded IRA and predicts TIMI flow.

barium sulfate
noun
A white insoluble radiopaque powder that is used as a contrast material to make certain body parts more visible in x-ray images. Radiopaque substances limit the penetration of x-rays and other forms of radiation.
Example: My doctor used some barium sulfate to see more clearly my stomach.

bone
noun
The dense, semi-rigid, porous, calcified connective tissue forming the major portion of the skeleton of most vertebrates .
Example: These minerals are found in bone and are vital to maintain good bone health and reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

bone scan
noun
A bone scan is a specialized radiology procedure used to examine the various bones of the skeleton. It is done to identify areas of physical and chemical changes in bone. A bone scan may also be used to follow the progress of treatment of certain conditions.
Example: I went to see a radiologist to do the bone scan and see how healthy are my bones.

diagnosis
noun
The identification of the nature and cause of a certain phenomenon.
Example: Assessment and diagnosis of speech and language disorders is built on the linguistic-descriptive approach.

fluoroscopy
noun
A technique where a fluorescent screen or image intensifying tube is connected to a closed-circuit television system to image internal structures of the body .

fracture
noun
A complete or incomplete break in a bone resulting from the application of excessive force .
Example: I fracture my ankle when I was younger.

noun
The technique and process used to create images of the human body for clinical purposes or medical science .
Example: Radiologists uses medical imaging every day.

medical record
A chronological written account of a patient’s examination and treatment that includes the patient’s medical history and complaints.

noun
Imaging of the portal circulation by x-rays, using contrast material, usually introduced into the spleen or into the portal vein at operation.

Examination of any part of the body for diagnostic purposes by means of x-rays with the findings usually recorded digitally or on film.

noun
Protection against harmful effects of radiation .
Example: We need the radioprotection because radiation can be harmful.

A radiotherapist is a person who treats diseases such as cancer by using radiation.

sonogram
noun
An image of a body organ or fetus created with reflected high-frequency sound waves.
Example: I showed my sonogram to my mother.

sonographer
noun
An allied health professional who has been specifically trained to perform ultrasound examinations. Many sonographers are certified by a registry of sonographers, provided they meet strict training requirements and pass examinations in basic ultrasound science and clinical applications.
Example: I went to see my sonographer to finally get to know the gender of my baby.

stress echocardiography
noun
A stress echocardiogram is a test done to assess how well the heart works under stress. The “stress” can be triggered by either exercise on a treadmill or a medicine called dobutamine.

ultrasound
noun
Ultrasound imaging, also known as ultrasound scanning or sonography, is a method of obtaining images from inside the human body through the use of high frequency sound waves. The soundwaves' echoes are recorded and displayed as a real-time, visual image.
Example: I have to take my wife for her ultrasound.

video capsule endoscopy
phrase
A procedure in which the patient swallows a tiny capsule holding a video camera and light. Over a period of hours, the camera sends images of the small intestine to a video recorder.
Example: The doctor was able to see inside my intestine thanks to the video capsule endoscopy.

x-ray
noun
A photographic or digital image of the internal composition of something, especially a part of the body, produced by X-rays being passed through it and being absorbed to different degrees by different materials.
Example: He is concerned that an x\-ray has been lost and believes that doctors are keeping something from him because he has not seen it himself.
